Text from the NHS Wales website:
A new White Paper from 1000 Lives Plus applies the knowledge of systems thinking to improving the care offered by NHS Wales and the wider Public Sector.
Professor Seddon is one of the leading experts in systems thinking, and has worked with a number of public sector organisations to achieve better client satisfaction and greater operating efficiency.
This White Paper includes:
An introduction to ‘systems thinking’, and how it can help to reshape organisations and improve services without raising costs
Real-life examples of how systems thinking has worked in the public sector
Insights into improving staff commitment and morale
Explanations of why many classic management responses to challenging circumstances fail to achieve what they set out to do
Many of the 1000 Lives Plus interventions introduced in organisations throughout Wales have focussed on improving systems. Examples include the implementation of ‘bundles’ of care to prevent infection and pressure ulcers, speed up rehabilitation after stroke and recovery after surgery, and reduce the likelihood of surgical complications.
Analysing and changing systems and procedures in NHS Wales further will considerably improve the patient experience of healthcare and offer significant financial savings. Movement towards ‘systems thinking’ will enable NHS Wales to meet external challenges, and its own aims and objectives.
Improved systems will lead to better patient outcomes and experience, and will also bring additional benefits in reduced waste, less variation in services, greater staff engagement, and long-term sustainability through introducing reliable processes.
The systems analysis in this white paper is also applicable to other public sector organisations in Wales, as it draws upon examples outside of healthcare to illustrate key points.
